Band D

The reference council tax band. Every other band is expressed as a fixed ratio of Band D.

Under Schedule 1 of the Local Government Finance Act 1992, Band D is the reference band with a ratio of 1. Band A pays 6/9ths of Band D, Band H pays 18/9ths (double). When councils publish their annual council tax rate, the headline figure is the Band D charge — everyone else's bill is calculated from it.
