Anatomy of a £1,500 council tax refund

A homeowner in the Midlands noticed a passing comment online about wrong council tax bands. He decided to check his own.

He compared his Band D to ten neighbouring properties on his street. Nine were Band C — same property type, same size, same era. The tenth was Band D and looked like an extension had pushed it up.

He submitted a challenge with the comparison evidence. The VOA reviewed and agreed: his property should be Band C. The council recalculated his bills going back to when he moved in, applied a credit, and offered to refund the cash on request. He asked for cash. Over £1,500 landed in his account.

His ongoing bill is now permanently lower. The whole process took a few months and cost him nothing beyond the time to put the comparison together.
